CLANKING OF BRAKE MECHANISM.

We regularly get complaints about the clank which occurs in the brake mechanism when the pedal is released. The severity of the noise varies with the amount of travel on the front and rear shoes respectively. A large proportion of the noise heard by the drive comes from the small scissor levers hitting the servo driving pins.

We have a number of suggestions from Oy. as to how to cure this, the attached print showing his recommendations. We have tried these out carefully, however, and have come to the conclusion that the cure achieved by these means is not consistent over the whole range of brake wear, it also introduces peculiarities into the brake operation that are not desirable.

The attached sketch R.1966. is a suggestion from the Repair Department that we have tried out. This achieves the required result of reducing the noise from the servo as long as the front pull off springs return the swinging arm to the same position each time. We find however, that the swinging arm friction on the 20 HP. is not so consistent as that on the Phantom. In order to avoid front brake thumps, this friction has to be set initially at a load where there is not very much margin to ensure that the swinging arm does not return to its zero point.
