To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. c. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} 8030 E2/M23.2.26. RE. LIGHTER PHANTOM ENGINE. X.8840 X.8000 X.8030 In our memo. E1/M21.11.25 we asked for a test to be made of a Phantom engine with the old short rods, to determine whether we could revert to the use of these with the object of saving weight. The maximum possible amount of reduction in dimensions that can be effected is 1 1/2" off the height of the crankcase. As it is desired to get the particulars for the lightened crankcase fixed, it appears to us that the best policy would be to instruct the lighter Phantom engine with the shorter rods.
