-2- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les.1/AP.3.4.37. The following are our recommendations - Items 1 and 2. will be deleted by the raised front engine mounting. If the present designs were needed strengthened plates Fw.370/1 would be required for the engine mounting frame brackets and a thicker casing Fw.179 for the rubber. 3. The spare wheel carrier requires design alteration. 4. The radiator has been run without a bonnet or wings which causes a very severe test. We do not think failures are likely to occur on the road. 5. Front suspension spring Gk.432 failed due to the particulars being electrically etched near the full diameter of the wire. Ph.III. springs which are higher stressed have run over 100 hours with the particulars etched on the end of the springs. The detail drawings still ask for the particulars to be stamped on the spring. Stamping was found quite impossible owing to the hardness of the spring. The drawing should show more clearly the exact position for the etching. 6. The laboratory will be issuing a report on the cracks in the top triangular levers Gk.795. They appear to be cracks which were originally in the forging. 7. The end dash bracket bolts worked loose shortly after starting. After two failures the running was completed with no bolt in this position. These bolts often fail on other bumper chassis. 8. The attachment of the bumper bar extension requires strengthening. 9. Design modifications are required for the petrol tank. 10. Rubber in this form is unsatisfactory for connecting links. Designs are required for lubricated ball links. 11. Rubber spring bushes. A design is required to encase the two bushes in a metal sleeve which is pushed into the spring eye. Wraith apparently was not modified when this alteration was made to Ph.III. continued | ||
