EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. -4- Expl. No. REF. GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}1/Crn6. 7. 25.

had accumulated. This has been cleaned and refitted.

Connecting rods.

We have had further trouble with these. No.3. con. rod had seized, and the metal ran out of bearing. No.5. conrod - the white metal was cracked. No.6. conrod was badly scored. Nos. 2, 4 and 1 conrods - slight cracks in metal. We have fitted a new set of conrods, special care being taken in the tinning, to prevent whitemetal from breaking away. Before fitting conrods we took the oil caps off crank journals. We found the bore of the journals were quite three quarters made up with soft carbon. It would be interesting to note the difference in amount of deposit in these journals by using different engine oils on these 10,000 miles tests.

Bonnet & fittings.

Rear portion of top centre hinge broken. Bonnet fabric has so worn that bonnet fasteners will not hold bonnet down. It has been necessary for safety to fit a strap over the bonnet for high speed work. Bonnet locks have worn, and will not stay locked.

Engine guards.

We consider these to be O.K. Engine has kept very clean under very exacting conditions.

Gearbox undershield.

This, as previously reported, could extend further back to take care of front end of gearbox. Otherwise we consider this O.K.

Radiator.

This is still in a good condition.

Radiator suspension, shutter, controls.

We have had no trouble with the radiator shutter. It is still working satisfactorily. Controls to radiator shutter are in good condition. As previously reported, the suspension of radiator has worn considerably. The radiator now is resting on channel (side).

Dashboard & brackets.

Dashboard brackets are O.K. There are two deep grooves worn in dashboard at either side at top, where bonnet has chattered.

Steering column & box suspension.

Modified steering, including rocking shaft, etc. to L.O.P. F.72863. This is still O.K. Leak of oil from contd :-
