X4479. c. to O.O. Expl. Dept. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rn. {Mr Robinson} 5/MJ. October 17th.1930. Messrs. Thos. Firth & Sons, Ltd., Norfolk Works, SHEFFIELD. Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter of the 16th.inst. ref:JWP., regarding our Order No.8708. In the first place we should like to point out that this order is for experimental springs. When we order experimental springs we are frequently forced to call for a spring which we should never seriously consider standardising. We order a spring in order to get the effect of various ratings on the riding qualities of the car. If we are successful in improving the riding of the car, we then go into the question of making the spring a working proposition. As you are probably aware, one of the main values of experimental tests is the speed at which they can be carried out. It is unfortunate in this case that our Order Office did not make it clear for what purpose these springs were intended. With reference to Mr. Stanfield's observations - Item (1). We asked for a pair of 1100 lbs. 66" rear springs to have their free camber increased from 8 3/4" to 9 3/4". In this case we do not see that there is any necessity for any further instructions as we have not specified how we are going to load the springs, and shall make sure ourselves that we do not over stress them. We specified alteration to standard springs in order that we should save time. Cont'd........... | ||
