Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} x7941oc To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} SY. re KRAI and Springing. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}15/226.11.30 I have read with considerable interest Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'s letter of the 14th November to you relative to 25-EX. The all-important question is of course that concerning springing. I have received a cable from Rs.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} this morning to say that with the low rating springs there is an improvement but it may still be criticised. He says Springfield are using as standard rear springs with 11" deflection and that for special jobs they go as far as 13. Our standard, I understand is 3 and 8½. You will remember that on the car I am using W. have fitted experimentally front springs having 5.5" deflection and rear springs having 10.25" and the result of tests shows considerable improvement under ordinary use as per my recent memo. PN{Mr Northey} has now made some high speed tests and says that at the higher speeds the steering was quite nice and effective - in fact he has no serious criticism to offer. I note that in your RE/M19.11.30 you fear trouble if we fit springs of greater flexibility than 4" front and 9" back, and as mentioned to you the other day I should really rather like you to try 58-GN, the car I am using, because it has springs of greater flexibility than this - it seems to me quite satisfactory - and even then they are less flexible than Springfield have been using with success. If you would like me to send 58-GN down to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town for you to try, would you please let me know and I will make immediate arrangements. Sg.{Arthur F.
