Would you kindly let Mr. Royce know, in accordance with his desire, in what particular manner we deal with that portion of the operations on connecting rods relating to the splitting of the big end, and the drilling and reaming of the bolt holes.

The point in doubt is whether the holes are drilled and reamed previously to the splitting operation, then after the latter has been carried out, and the joining surfaces of the rod and cap redressed, when the cap is again mated with the rod, it is highly possible that the bolt holes in the cap will not be axially in line with the bolt holes in the rod.

The only way, apparently, of avoiding this error is to drill and ream the bolt holes after the splitting and facing operations, but Mr. Royce is under the impression that this is not our practice.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
