To R.{Sir Henry Royce} & E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} From EFC. c.c. Ey. EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} ORIGINAL EFC3/T22.9.24. X.4414P - P & R BATTERIES FOR 20 H.P. This report will supplement our recent report EFC6/T4.9.24, covering two matters concerning P & R batteries which were not there included, namely:- (1) The use latterly of harder type paste. (2) The one-piece six-compartment moulded Dagenite cell cases. (1) The P & R Battery, a description of the internal condition of which was given in and under cover of our above mentioned report, was one of the first to be specially made by Messrs. Peto & Radford to our fixed 20 HP. dimensions, and differed from what is now standard in two points, namely:- (a) That as previously reported, this battery did not contain ebonite separators in addition to wood, and (b) As previously unreported, that it was not pasted with the improved type harder paste which Messrs. P & R are at present using. As regards (a), though only one 20 HP. P & R battery has ever shown any signs of plates buckling, it is considered necessary, in view of our early experience with Exide batteries without the ebonite separators in addition to those of wood, to include these ebonite separators in every battery. Accordingly all the P & R batteries now supplied are fitted with such additional separation. As regards (b), please find attached copy of our note EFC2/T7.11.23 issued to Ey. & Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}, following a visit of ours to Messrs. P & R.{Sir Henry Royce}, describing comparative observations of soft and hard paste in batteries which had | ||
