20/25 H.P. TANK ENGINES.

With regard to the argument we are having with the War Office Contracts Department regarding the supply of the filter unit, apparently the whole point as to whether it is our supply under the contract or if it should be supplied to us by the War Office turns on whether or no it is essential to fit the unit on the engine side of our ballast resistance or on the other side. If it must be fitted on the engine side, the Contracts people at present hold that it is our supply. If, however, it can be fitted on the other side, there is little doubt that we shall be able to avoid supplying it. We feel that the Contracts people are anxious to meet us in this matter if it is made legally possible. Will you please say, therefore, whether it is practicable to fit the filter unit on the other side of the ballast resistance.

In connection with this matter we heard verbally this morning that the War Office are placing an order with us for a further sixty engines before the end of this month, so as to obtain the advantage of the price reduction which we have promised them. We can therefore watch the point regarding the filter unit in the next contract and definitely ensure that it is deleted.

F.{Mr Friese}
