To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c.c. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Nor. c.c. to RV. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. to Rg.{Mr Rowledge} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/4/10.9.30. x4469 x7010 ORIGINAL NITRO HARDENED STEEL. With reference to R4/16.9.30. We have completed 16,000 miles on 23-EX. car fitted with a Nitro hardened crankshaft. This includes the 10,000 miles test in France. We have also run 4,000 miles on a 20 HP. car fitted with a Nitro crankshaft, and we have run 150 hours on an "F" engine fitted with Nitro crankshaft. We are sending a Standardisation Sheet round for Nitro hardened cranks in Phantom engines. Our recommendation is that at first we should order fifty crankshafts in this material and to fit them in cars as they become available. This will give us a chance, without being committed too far, of making sure that we can obtain consistent results with the material and with production of this type of shaft.
