Re Oil Separator for Tyre Pump.
-----------------------------

Maxfield's are supplying an oil separator for use with their pump, and it may be found that it is suitable for the Rolls-Royce pump, also; but we have made a scheme of a separator of rather larger dimensions, and on the lines discussed with you during a recent visit, and send a print of "N" Scheme 611 herewith.

This apparatus strikes us as being rather bulky, especially as compared with the Maxfield, but Col. Hutchinson, as a result of his experience, suggested that the felt should be 3" in diameter by about 12" long, so that we are small compared with that. The Maxfield is 1.32 diameter by 1.75 long. It may be thought that a reduction to 3" in diameter in our case would be a suitable size.

We have shewn a relief valve, but on the Maxfield a very simple method is used. The man unscrews a valve and allows the air to escape when the pressure has reached the desired amount. The valve is simply a fibre washer which closes the end of the central stud, and is of the crudest description.

We thought that the best way would be to gain experience with the Maxfield separators, and then only proceed with this one if it was evident that the Maxfield would be too small or otherwise unsuitable.

We shew two methods of mounting. That is Fig I is suggested because if the separators were used in armoured cars we are not quite sure how they can be fastened inside the
