200B 402 Cgh.{W Clough}15/W.18.10.37. ~~POY.~~ c. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} ~~c. HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}~~ Bentley III Chassis. Rear Axle Hypoid Bevel Gears. Will you please order from Gleason Works :- 3 Pairs of 10 x 43 ratio, 0.65 offset hardened hypoid bevel gears to our detail drawings GB.1502 & GB.2352, prints of which are handed to you herewith, and similar to the 6 sets of gears which they supplied to us against our order 72658 towards the end of 1934 and their Summery No. 508. The only difference between the three pairs we are now ordering and the six pairs delivered previously is that we have increased the diameter of the shank at the front end of the pinion, and are asking for the shanks to be case-hardened. We are of the opinion that the cutters will clear the increased diameter shank of the pinion, but if not please ask Gleasons to make similar alterations to what they have suggested in the case of the 8 x 34 hypoid bevels to Summary 823 and dealt with in their letter dated 1st. October, 1937. If it is found necessary to make such alterations they should, of course, go ahead with the work but submit particulars to us as quickly as possible. We understand that you have already sent the order through Messrs. Buck & Hickman for cutter equipment for this ratio of gears, therefore will you please arrange for a cable to be sent out to Gleason Works requesting them not to put anything in hand until they receive the above order and covering letter.
