OIL AND SLUDGE

Sample Nos. 16627 and 16628.

SAMPLE No. 16627 - OIL
--------------------

This sample (total amount received about 100 grammes) consists of a very dark green oil with no appreciable sediment.

An analysis gave the following figures:-

+ Suspended solids 0.013%
+ Ash 0.23%
+ Saponification value 12.5 MGMS KOH/GRAMMES
+ Acidity 1.2 " " "

+ These tests were carried out on a sample which had been freed from suspended solids.

The Ash contains oxides of tin, lead, iron and chromium.

It will be noted that the ash considerably exceeds the proportion of suspended solids. Assuming that the lubricating oil originally used contained a small proportion of added fatty oil or fatty acids, metals present may have combined with the free or liberated fatty acids and formed metallic soaps soluble in the oil.

Alternatively, or in addition, one of the oils may have been used containing tin and chromium oleates.
