Memo: from AJB. 15310 c. to C.J. c. to S.R. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to H.T. c. to T.H.S. SECRET. INDIA - 4 SPEED GEAR BOX. At 12.15 last night we sent R.{Sir Henry Royce} the following telegram:- "GEAR CAME OUT WITH CONSIDERABLE FORCE ON FIRST TEST WITH PLAIN BEARING REVERSE. NEAR ONE SEIZED SLIGHTLY. IN SECOND TEST WITH LARGER CLEARANCES TWELVE POUNDS REQUIRED AT SLIDERS TO HOLD GEAR IN AT FULL TORQUE BUT BEARINGS EXCELLENT AND FORK NOT BAD AFTER HALF AN HOUR. MODIFYING SHAFT FOR FURTHER TEST AND TRYING SHALLOW KEYS AS PER YOUR SUGGESTION NEXT. FURTHER CONFIRMATORY TEST OF FIRST AND SECOND SPEED WITH SPLINES AS FIGURE TWO IN OUR LETTER OF SEVENTEENTH PROVES THESE PERFECTLY OK". We seem to have eliminated all doubts about first and second speed, as the confirmatory test referred to in the above telegram was carried out under the same adverse conditions as the first test of these.
