HEAD OFFICE & WORKS, MELKSHAM, WILTS. JGM/NAW. Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. 26th June, 1939. Attention:- Mr. S.H. Grylls. Dear Sirs, During our discussions of 15th June you mentioned that you might consider 4-ply 7.50/16 tyres for a Continental Touring Model of the 1940 Bentley. As arranged then we will manufacture for test at Derby and in France 7.50/16 tyres with casings consisting of 4 plies of low stretch cord. We would, however, draw your attention to the fact that the various tyres which you have in mind for next year's models should be fitted to rims as shown in the following table:- Tyre Size. Recommended Rim. 6.50/16 ...... 4.50 E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 7.00/16 ...... 5.00 F.{Mr Friese} 7.50/16 ...... 5.50 F.{Mr Friese} We are drawing your attention to this fact so that it can be catered for in your test programme, because if a tyre is tested on a rim which is narrower or has a lower flange than standard for that size of tyre then there will be a reduction in tyre stability which will be reflected in high slip angle readings. We would be grateful if you would confirm whether the Pilote tyre used by you in cornering power tests was size 205/400. Yours faithfully, THE AVON INDIA RUBBER COMPANY LIMITED.
