Upon dismantling the axle at Rue Gide, we found that there had been a leakage of oil past the o/s (RH{R. Hollingworth}) axle seal, then via the tube and through the oil drain. Upon examination of the oil seals, we find that the o/s seal is defective and that the n/s one is OK. We are sending you the seals for examination.

It will be observed, upon reference to the o/s seal that the axle shaft and the leather seal have been revolving together. It will also be observed, as in several previous cases, that the inner metal ring of the seal has also been revolving.

We also noticed, after the dismantling of the axle, that certain parts such as the various ball bearings etc., were of a "nut brown" colour. We have put this down to high oil temperature. You will observe that the inner metal ring of the o/s oil seal is coloured in the same way. Please let us know if the above has been caused by high oil temperature.

The gears were found to have badly seized. They were also coloured in the same way.

Please let us know if we are to return them to you for examination.
