To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to CJ. ORIGINAL. RE SPRINGS. X.2628 X.1295 RECEIVED 23 JUL 1920 R3/G21/7/20. (7) X.2650 You will notice in some of my recent memos that I have the impression that we have lost considerably in beauty of suspension by doing away with the split leaves of the springs. To retain some of the advantages of these we might split them less far along, say, half and two-thirds, instead of right up to the central fixing. Also, somewhat the same effect is obtained by putting the spring XXXXXXXXXX under instead of over the axle, as the control of the body in this position is less severe, and therefore the road reactions are less severe. It would, however, require considerable experience with these two modifications before we can think of recommending their adoption, but I should like you to test them whenever an opportunity permits.
