Contd. -2- Dal/G12.9.21. In fact it was shewn that had the springs been exactly to drawing they would almost certainly have given their exact load. When Mr. Stott reported this to me, and said that BY's department were pressing for more springs, I immediately instructed to issue these springs already calculated on our method, and supposed that this had naturally been done, until I learn from Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} on Friday that the springs had not been instructed. The dates are:- 25th. May - report from Woodhead on the original experimental springs. As soon as after this as the calculations (taking into account the tapered ends) had been completed, two more experimental springs were ordered to the new method, but I have not the exact date. 16th. August. These two new experimental springs received from Woodheads. 18th. August. (received 20th. August) Mr. Stott reported their receipt, had measured them up, and told me the favourable result mentioned above. 22nd. August. I instructed Mr. Stott to issue the remaining springs (already calculated on our method, and waiting to be instructed) to BY's Dept. for ordering. 9th. Sept. Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} and Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reported that there had been no springs order owing to a dispute with Mr. Stott which had not been reported to me.
