Tyre Noise on Phantom III & 20/25 HP.

You will observe from the report on the first 2,500 miles' running on 32-EX in France (Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/KW.18.5.36), that the new type of tyre moulded with a tie bar between the shoulder studs became bad for groans after 1,000 miles' running. This confirms our previous experience that tyres after 3,000 or 4,000 miles on English roads and 1,000 miles on Continental roads reach their worst state for low speed tyre noise, after which they improve. The tyre developed for the Ph.III by Dunlops is therefore no exception to the rule.

From tests we have made on 35-EX since it was returned from Sales, it appears that the chamfered tyres behaved in much the same way.

We are not satisfied with this state of affairs, and Dunlops are at present working with us to overcome the difficulty.
