It was agreed that the design of this part should be reconsidered from a manufacturing point of view, as it was felt that it could be considerably improved for the purpose of facilitating manufacture. In the meantime Works will proceed with the manufacture according to pre-war methods, but as regards external finish Mr. Swift informed the Meeting that the Works were preparing a complete chassis omitting what is known in the Works as unnecessary finish. This is in order that the whole question of finish may be considered in detail, and an agreement reached on this point. Sliding Piece for Side Steering Tube. F.{Mr Friese} 4969 Mr. Swift explained the considerable number of operations necessary to produce this piece in accordance with drawing. These operations were necessary. The piece is specified as being hard on the centre [stem] and in the ball cup, but soft everywhere else. It was finally agreed that manufacture would be facilitated if the part were left hard on the outside diameter and very soft adjacent to the ball cup, but the Carburising would be turned off on the back face [flat faced]. This was agreed. Outer Plug for Steering Tube. F.{Mr Friese} 4968. This part also was difficult to manufacture owing to the number of operations necessitated by a certain parts being hard. It was agreed that experimental sets should be made and heat treated instead of the Nickel Steel C.H.N.S. specified. In the meantime the works will proceed with the parts as ordered. Inner Plug for Steering Tube. F.{Mr Friese} 4967. Similiar arrangements to those quoted for F.{Mr Friese} 4968 were agreed to. Exhaust Box Plug. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 2279. The Tool Office asked that two holes for a Pin Hole Spanner might be shown in this Plug for fitting purposes. It was held that this would facilitate manufacture and avoid parting off on the fitter's bench. This was agreed to, but in addition it was proposed that a new design should be prepared in which the turned and screwed plug should be replaced by a pressed or stamped plug, which would be welded into place. Priming Cock. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 7164 The Production Drawing Office desire to correct the quoted position of split pin holes and also to call an hand-undercut in lieu of chanfer. This was agreed subject to Mr. Swift's confirmation, as he desired to look into the position of the parts in the shops. It was also noted that fibre | ||
