Bailey - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}11/R.10.2.37. P.III MATERIAL. 35-EX now running in France is fitted with a number of features which are of considerable value in making a better motor-car, and some of which reduces cost. The D.O. are concerned with ordering material for the next 200 cars and state that they will have to go ahead with 100 immediately. Had it not have been for the accident to 35-EX, we should undoubtedly have been in a position to order the modified parts even on the first 100 of these cars. As it is we have had to tell them to go ahead as at present for half the series. There is no doubt that on all these items the proof run would be completed before the cars were on test even if the material were released to-day. We are, therefore, tabulating the features in question in case it may be considered worth while risking material in order to accelerate their introduction on production:- (1) 4-Port Head with Silent Tappets. This head is running on 35-EX with the Silent Tappets locked up solid. We have done a lot of running on the Test Bench with it here. The only modification we recommend for the pattern of the 4-Port Head is the wider stud boss, which will enable the silent tappets to be deleted as, and when, tests on this modification are successfully concluded. The 4-Port Head has the additional advantage that it enables us to do away with the somewhat expensive steam valve in the radiator. (2) Exhaust System. We have now completed our experimental work on the simplified P.III exhaust system, the tests are divided into two sections:- (a) The use of Aluminized Mild Steel. This is running on 35-EX in France, and, of course, produces a big cost saving. (b) Simplification of the Main Silencer. Experiments have just been concluded on this which approximately halve its weight and size and the parts are being sent out | ||
