brought on by fanatic driving to get the brakes smoking, and OWH. agrees that this was the method employed to cause the failure complained of, and was intended to reproduce such driving as would occur on say an Alpine trials run. It is generally agreed that this is not likely to arise as a complaint, and also the only cure is larger and larger brake area and more brake cooling. It was decided to see if it is possible to get more air cooling on the drums and also as the modified anti-water device appears to have no advantages, not to use this, which will have the effect of replacing one cooling rib. In addition we have a scheme ready for trying 14" diameter wider brake drums which step up the capacity particularly of the front and even the rate of wear. There are further improvements in view covering this feature.

With regard to the brake cams becoming rusted up, this refers to the notching device which locks the easy adjustment, and we propose to modify the design so that these notches are hidden away together with the thread of the adjusting nut inside a protecting skirtformed on the wing nut itself, and once packed with grease we do not think trouble with rusting should recurr.

Two points not mentioned in this section in Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}10/E.15.12.33 are brake thumps and brake ineffectiveness due to water. With regard to the former, these can be kept down by maintaining the brakes in an adjusted up condition on the front, and now that we have an easily accessible adjustment particularly on the front, this complaint should very largely fade out.

With regard to the latter, we now know that Ferodo is much better than the AMN. material in not being so much affected by water, that is to say, loss of braking after passing through a deep water splash or washing of the car and the AMR. has been held up pending a decision as to whether the higher friction coefficient of the latter should be sacrificed in favour of the greater consistency of Ferodo.

(6) Petrol Pump.

The sticking of the valves in the petrol pump occurred with the ESSO fuel after the car had been standing for two days. It is certainly a serious matter if the valves should stick in this way. OWH. reports that he got them cleared by injecting paraffin on the one half of the pump and the other half eventually freed itself.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} is taking up this matter with the S.U. Co. and also asking Paris for their experience on the use of this fuel on the trials Bentley and also the streamline car. There is no doubt that if the S.U. pump in this case is
