We send you herewith LeC. 2496. This is an unfinished scheme dealing with the further development of the above.

On this drawing the details of the bearing near the pinion have been worked out, and the method of supplying lubricant has been shewn. Means of carrying away excess oil so that this oil cannot get on the windings of the motor have been provided at both ends of the armature spindle.

The method of carrying the pinion in the armature spindle has been modified so that the keyways for the drive are now brought out right to the end of the shaft, and can therefore be more easily cut. Serrations have been provided in the bore of the shaft with a view to preventing each of the internal rods from turning.

The motor is held up with three bolts threaded through the end cover, the heads being buried in diecast recesses provided, the end cover being a diecasting in aluminium.

We are unable to progress much further with this design without reference to the actual model, as it is necessary to arrange that the recesses and features of the end cover shall be such as to provide room for the projecting windings and their connections at the driving end of the motor. Our drawing herewith we believe is not a true record of what has been done with respect to these windings.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} would like you to carry on in Derby and complete the schemes for this motor for his approval, shewing all the remaining information required.

We shall in due course prepare a scheme shewing the mounting for the starter motor on the EAC. 10. crankcase. The mounting will be very similar to LeC. 2496, since the same motor should be employed, and in fact only requires modification due to the crankchamber split being 1" below the crankshaft centre.
