Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. EFC. x3398b BY8/P28.11.23. X.4617. X.3398b. X.4414. 40/50 CHASSIS; BATTERY. Whilst regretting my inability to be present at yesterday's interview with Mr. Minchin, as representing the P & R Battery Co., I have received Mr. Clough's report, who acted in my absence, and after careful consideration of the whole position, I am satisfied that the right attitude to adopt in this matter is the following :- (1) That we should adopt the proposals put forward by Exide in relation to the arrangement of the cells and the cell connectors, rather than the P & R proposal. (2) It is essential for us to have both batteries precisely similar, both in regard to the plate unit, that is, the internal dimensions of the cells, as well as the external dimensions of same. (3) The separators should be of the same dimensions and each battery must incorporate the half millimeter thickness of ebonite to ensure us against buckling plates "pinching" through the wood separators. (4) I think it preferable to retain the form of battery connection we are at present using, as I do not feel that our experience with the 20 HP. taper type would justify us in going to this at present. I certainly would like to have more experience with the taper type in order to determine positively whether it remains tight in service, or not. (5) Having settled the question of the dimensions of the battery and the arrangement of same in box, we think it necessary for Mr. Minchin of the P & R Co. and Mr. McKinnon of the Exide Co. to meet "FC. at these Works, in order to settle precisely the particulars of the plates so far as regards numbers and dimensions. Would Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} kindly write to both of the gentlemen in question and arrange a date convenient to both for a conference. Contd. | ||
