Chateauroux. HA/RS{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}/3. 22/5/30. We have to-day received your letter Ha/Rs{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}/3. 20/5/30. We had occasion, at 5,000 miles, to take the servo down to find a reason for the uneven load of the swinging arm. We examined the cotton back washers and they were in a perfectly good condition. We again had it to pieces at 9,000 miles to fit the servo damper, and the cotton backwashers still in a good condition. There was no sign of the cotton duck washers tearing away as you report has been the case on a customer's car. We will bear this in mind and examine it at the end of 14,000 miles. We should like to draw attention to the swinging arm on the 26-H2. The bearing of this arm is steel to steel, and we found that our trouble was due to the bearing of the swinging arm picking up, therefore altering the friction load. On the 26-H2 this bearing is lined with Ferodo. When we get a more consistent friction, could not this be applied to the 26-H2 swinging arm? During our investigation of the stoppage of oil, it has come to our notice that there is no bijur fitted to the namely of the cross steering-tube ball end, whereas there is a bijur fitted to the merely to the front side steering tube ball end. We cannot understand the reason of this, as the two ball ends are equally important that sufficient oil should be obtained. Therefore they cannot as have a straight through passage for the front ball end of the side steering tube, as well as the supplying the Front ball and for the cross steering tube. Will you please let us have the reason of this phenomenon? We found that the bijur supplying the Front ball end was not passing any oil. We took it to pieces to try and obtain the reason for it, and the only thing that we could definitely find was that the little brass plunger inside the bijur was sticking, and we could not make it to function by cleaning and doing everything other than resorting to enlarging the hole or filing the plunger. We therefore fitted a new bijur. Handwritten note in right margin: Press Work Lemon By WAK Re the exhaust valves. We have carefully reset the clearances of the valves, and it will be a routine job to check the clearances every morning before starting up when the engine is dead cold, because trying to check them hot is very misleading because of the varying temperatures which it is impossible to obtain. We might herewith mention that we experienced trouble with erratic running through the nut working loose that attaches the vacuum pipe on to the induction pipe. It was some time before we found out that we were sucking air at this point which entirely cut out No. 6 cylinder at slow speeds. This is the first time in our experience that this has happened, but seeing that it has happened, we think precautions should be taken to ensure that this nut could be looked.up. We leave it to your discretion. Handwritten note in right margin: Chassis attention By WAK R.A.H. | ||
