June 8th, 1916.

With reference to your memo R4/W6616 and Oy4/W3616,

I am sending on to you under separate cover the faulty worm-wheel shaft, which failed at Kingsnorth, and which I referred to in my report. (The piece No. of this is E.6621.)

The description was an error, and should not have been worm shaft, but worm wheel shaft.

This matter has been dealt with by Mr Bailey in his memo By10/G6616.

All the worm wheel shafts which have given trouble are the old type as per the above piece number.

The strengthened worm wheel shaft suitable for the wireless drive is fixed as standard on the "close up" type hand starter, drawing No.E.8957, and this type has not yet been fitted to any engines, nor has it been tested.

A changeover type of wormwheel shaft E.9338, is also in hand for the purpose of changing over the worm wheel shafts on all the existing hand starters, which have now been delivered, i.e. (60, drawing No.E.6872.)
