SECRET. E.W.H. ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} NOR. EFC. STARTER MOTOR LUBRICATION. R4/M18.3.29. REC'D AT WW. 22.3.29. X7625 LeC. 2683. This is a minor item but we should like to be sure it is reliable and as simple as possible. Even if we used two feeding tubes we might still keep the internal lubrication provided by LeC. 2683. Another alternative would be to carry by pipe and oil ways the lubrication to the minor bearing where we could get inside the spindle easier, and the natural inclination of the transmission would cause the oil to flow to the larger (main bearing) end, but we want plenty of oil at the main bearing and on the pinion teeth. I should try to avoid alteration to the castelllations driving the pinion. Perhaps we could get the oil to an annulus nearer the centre of the length of the minor bearing, and the three radial holes opposite. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
