To Bentley Motors Ltd. Derby. Copy to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} GRY{Shadwell Grylls} Levallois Sr/VAI/ET.14.10.36 Re: CHASSIS B.28.DG - Mr. SERT Just before 12 o'clock on Saturday morning, the 3rd instant, the Garage du Kursall, Geneva, telephoned to us and requested us to send by return a set of new axle gears and a new rear axle thrust bearing. We informed the Garage du Kursall that the fitting of new gears, and especially the setting of them, was a job that needed special attention. They informed us that they had a mechanic who had worked in our shops a few years ago and that they were quite able to carry out the work. The gears etc.. were dispatched as requested. We telephoned the Garage du Kursall early on the following Monday morning to say that we were preparing instructions as to how the gears should be fitted etc.. The instructions in question were a translation into French of your memo Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/SB{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}1S/HR.29.3.35, "Instructions for fitting new axle gears - Bentley chassis". The instructions were sent to the above Garage on Monday, the 5th instant. The Garage du Kursall have since informed us that the chauffeur, on behalf of the owner, pressed them for delivery of the car and they consequently did not wait for our instructions. They informed us that, after they had fitted the new gears, the axle was quite silent. The original gears and the pinion thrust bearing have been returned to us and, upon examination, we find the following: I. Failure of the GB.1442 thrust bearing, the steel cage and balls etc.. are badly chewed up. 2. What portion of the pinion which takes the Hoffmann R.317.LL roller bearing has broken away. Please refer to sketch attached. The teeth of the gears are in good condition. Please let us know whether you wish us to send you any or all of the above mentioned parts for examination. The crown wheel is in very good condition. Can anything be done with it. The last time we attended to the above car was on the 3.8.36. The car had then covered a total mileage of 30.146 Kms. We take it that we shall be in order in debiting W/P account with the new parts supplied by us to the Garage du Kursall. Sr/VA.V4 | ||
