USE OF MINERAL OIL ON CARS.
-------------------------

Referring to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}9/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 19.12.24. with attached correspondence, which I return herewith, I do not feel that there is any advantage to be gained by drawing up Bulletins similar to those sent along as samples.

We are not particularly anxious to appear to advertise, at our expense, any particular Oil Company. At any rate, our Instruction Book is and should be sufficiently explanatory to cover the whole point.

In regard to the question of mineral oil, personally I think there is a distinct advantage to be gained by using same.

The matter is, however, in the hands of the Experimental Dept. who have been trying out different oils under running conditions in France.

Some time since I definitely recommended that we should do our test running on mineral oil, with the object of cutting out the rusting effects between the piston rings and the cylinder walls, which set up squawks during the testing period. The reason why I did not carry it further was that I felt I was well within my authority in carrying it to that particular point, but not beyond it; secondly, I was inclined to think that by the time the engines were delivered, the cylinder barrels and piston rings themselves would have been sufficiently well polished to have overcome the tendency to rust, which is the base of the trouble.

Where you have trouble with customers, however, I see no reason why we should not recommend either Vacuum BB. or Valvoline to overcome this particular fault, since neither of these oils contain any Vegetable oil, and therefore they are not liable to oxidation and consequent acidity like Prices' engine oil which we are recommending at the moment.

Contd.
