BENTLEY GEARBOX - THIRD MOTION SHAFTS.
------------------------------------

We are sending you as a matter of interest, two 3rd. motion shafts taken out of gearboxes at a mileage of 43,491 and 51,325 respectively. Excessive wear has taken place at the position for the housing of the centre ball race. The spacing washers are also badly worn. This is the only real fault with the gearbox, and if it could be improved, one would say its the only 99½% job on the Bentley.

The box which ran 51,325 miles came in for 2nd. gear jumping out of mesh. The one that ran 43,491 miles came in for a rattle, no other complaints.

It is interesting to state that only one ball race in the two boxes required changing, the one in question feeling lumpy, otherwise it would not have been changed.

Mr Clark informs me that these two shafts could be made good by the Fescol cold electrical depositing of nickel at an approximate cost of £1 per shaft. They have had a considerable amount of experience with this firm with their old Bentleys, and he is convinced that a perfectly good job could be made.

With your permission after you have seen the shafts we should like to treat one ,and return it for your examination and approval.
