RE VISIT TO MESSRS. SMITH & SONS.

X.4359.S
X.4342.S Dynamo & Motor for Small Car.

An enquiry has been placed with Messrs. Smith for a dynamo for the small car. Their type 4D, rated at 12 volts 8 amperes(the 2D is rated at 12 volts 12 amps), is thought to be suitable, and the fixing of this dynamo to Goshawk II is being considered by our Design Dept. in correspondence with Messrs. Smith. This is a 5" diameter machine - weight 19 lbs. Cold cutting in speed 750 r.p.m. (This would be rather late).

Quantity price with such minor improvements as we have on the 2D machine, £11.10.0.

For your information we send you copy of a table of dynamos made by Messrs. Smith; the last one having been made specially for Sizaire Berwick.

As regards the two Smith cutouts, the shunt coil of one of which is wound with all copper, and of the other half resistance of copper and half Eureka, we shall shortly be sending you a report of the operation of these.

An enquiry has also been placed with Messrs. Smith for a starter motor suitable for Goshawk II and it is thought their type 5S is suitable, this having a carcase diameter of 4½"

X 4165. Should it turn out that Messrs. Smiths have now succeeded in meeting our requirements in every direction in the case of the dynamo, it would appear that we ought to very seriously consider the standardisation of this machine for the 40/50 chassis. This, however, necessarily means dispensing with the Lucas switchbox and possibly putting in its place an R.R. switchboard and distribution board. The Smith dy {F R Danby} cutout would necessarily be considered in connection with the Smith dynamo in this matter.
