X3907 INTER-OFFICE CORRESPONDENCE ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC SPRINGFIELD, MASS. CC Mr. Nadim Mr. Belnap Oy2 - G 27621 June 27, 1921 Dear Hives:- X3907 Re: Ball Bearings Before leaving the subject of ball bearings and supple-menting my letter on bevel thrust bearings, the following may be of interest: All our thrust bearings are "special" and cost from 2 to 4 times as much as standard bearings of the same capacity. The modern design in America would not use any of them except possibly those taking the main thrust of the bevel gear. Our joint experience is that American cars do not give trouble from ball bearings, in spite of this omission. I am sending you herewith a New Departure bearing catalog which illustrates some typical designs. We would recommend the following thrust bearings as readily dispensed with: (1) Magneto drive: Use one standard deep groove bearing, no entrance slots, to carry journal load of gear, and end thrust short plain bearing at other end of shaft. (2) Governor drive: Do. (3) Camshaft drive: Use one standard deep groove bearing, no entrance slots, to carry thrusts both ways, and no plain bearing. (4) Governor spindle: Dispense with the two small ball thrusts and use deep groove bearings, one of which will easily carry end load. | ||
