Herewith we send N. scheme 2159. shewing further experimental modifications to the shock damper asked for by R.{Sir Henry Royce}

(1) A large flat filter with a standpipe to enable the ingoing oil to be filtered and so protect the pistons as well as the rest of the system. Of the 2 alternatives shewn we think the one cast solid with the aluminium body of the shock damper will be the one preferred.

(2) We also shew R's proposed gland, annular space, and oil drain.

(3) We have also indicated the proposed piston ring pinned at the bottom, and the proposed grooves.

We think it would not be wise to modify the pattern to do these experiments, at any rate until we have heard R's views, but we suggest that some preliminary experimental work might be done towards finding out whether any of these points are likely to be successful. There seems a doubt for instance whether the filling will be sufficiently rapid with the fine mesh filter as shewn, and in view of the experimental results there is some doubt whether the arrangement of packing gland will overcome the trouble without some further modification, for instance, raising the height of the rocker shaft above the pistons, but a gland could be arranged temporarily somewhat as shewn to find out whether there is any hope in this direction.

We think also an experimental ring could be rigged up to discover its effect upon the cylinder.
