X4429. WCR. c. to BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Sft. {Mr Swift} c. to EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} ROY {Sir Henry Royce} /RCB3/HP2.6.30. S.L.V. Steel for Valves. We regret to inform you that we are advised by our suppliers of the above material, Messrs. Thos. Firth & Sons Limited, that they have had to reject the whole cast of ingots prepared against our orders after same had been softened, planed and tested. Consequently it is necessary for them to remelt a further cast, but it is difficult at the moment to specify a definite date for delivery until they have satisfied themselves that this cast will prove satisfactory. The position is made more difficult since our stocks have entirely run out due to the reintroduction of S.L.V. Steel for the Exhaust Valves in place of H.R. Crown, and we are likely to hold up the shops for 40/50 HP. Chassis Valves, 20-HP. Chassis Valves, Valves for Chassis Repairs, and for Eagle Engines. Furthermore we have no material to give the works to produce valves for the "F" Engine. The analysis of the new cast, number 67159 submitted under Firth's reference "Stainless CAC/JVH" of the 30th May is as follows:- C. Si. Mn. S. P. Cr. {Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester} Ni. .46 3.30 .52 .010 .025 7.22 .20 We understand from BY {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} /EM this cast is quite a good one, and we are wiring our approval immediately. | ||
