ROY. {Sir Henry Royce} c.Hor. c.HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X4429 BY {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} /EM4/J.4.6.30. S.L.V. Steel for Valves. We note the contents of your letter ROY {Sir Henry Royce} /RCB3/HP, 2.6.30, with regard to the above material and we observe that Messrs Firths, have had to reject the whole cast of ingots prepared against our orders. We would point out that this is not the first time that this has happened, in fact it is generally acknowledged that these high silicon steels are most difficult to handle in the initial stages and that rejections of this nature are very often necessary. As the H.R.Crown Steel has not come up to expectations and we know of nothing better than the S.L.V. Steel for our purposes, we are strongly of the opinion that Messrs.Thomas Firths' should be given the necessary order to produce a further cast of material in addition to the one we have just approved of so that they have ample material available to meet our demands and to cover such incidents as that mentioned in your letter referred to above.
