Dear Sir,

We have been informed by our Inspecting Engineer for the Western Counties that the water temperature on your Bentley Car B-1-AE, runs at some figure below 70°C. in Winter and about 75°C. in the Summer, and that you think this water temperature should be higher.

The correct running temperature on the Bentley engine, as selected by us, is approximately 78°C., and the water temperature should approximate to this Winter and Summer. Under full throttle conditions it will of course rise above this in hot weather, the shutters being fully open.

Since your average water temperature is apparently well below 78°C., one of two things may be at fault - (a) the shutters may not be set correctly relative to the Calorstat, and (b) the thermostat may be faulty.

(a) can be checked by looking at the shutters: if set correctly they should be completely shut with the water cold. If incorrectly set they can be re-set by loosening the nut 'A' marked on the attached drawing, holding shutters closed with one hand and re-tightening nut 'A', all to be done with the water cold.

If the thermostat is at fault it can only be corrected by fitting a new unit. We are sending you a new Calorstat unit, so that if you cannot correct the matter by re-setting the shutters, you will be able to fit the new unit and return the old one to us.
