| 11. ELECTRICAL. WIRING & FITTINGS. Wiring adjacent to steering box and beneath oil pump on dash was found to be soaked with oil. STARTER MOTOR The commutator is burnt due to sluggish action of brushes caused by gumming of oil in the holders. It is considered that the presence of oil is due to leakage into the motor either from the engine into the pinion end or as a result of oil being spilt over the motor externally. The amount of oil fed to the bearings for lubrication purposes is limited by the felt pads and wick feed from the reservoirs. Apart from this point the motor is in good electrical condition. DYNAMO (Built by Production.) General condition good. The amount of wear on the brushes is normal and the surfaces are well polished. Sufficient wear has taken place on the commutator to form a slight ridge between the brush tracks. A certain amount of oil, presumably from the commutator end bearing has got inside the end cover and onto the commutator and brush gear. As a result the commutator is blackened somewhat and the brushes are slightly sluggish in the holders. REGULATOR - Cutout Unit. The operating values of the regulator are too low i.e. O.C. volts are 13.9 to 14.8 instead of 14.7 to 15.7. At 13 volts output is 6.0 to 11.0 amps. instead of 14.0 to 16.5 amps. This may be due to the regulator having got out of adjustment in some way or, more probably, due to wear on the contact points. Apart from this the regulator is in good condition. The Cutout is also in good condition apart from being too early in operation, the operating voltage being 11.0 instead of a minimum of 12.2. This may be due to the armature control spring having weakened or becoming out of adjustment.
