Contd. -2- E5/G30.12.20. covering. The shape of this pipe should follow the lines of the one shewn for the "Buzzard" (Lec.1238) and these lines have been approximately indicated in pencil on blue print of N. scheme 685 which is returned herewith. (2) N. SCHEME 683. Referring to the full scale scheme of the manifold there are a number of points as follows:- (a) The depth of the bosses for the two-bolt falnges should be doubled, it is thought to make these flanges safe, and the centre of the main pipe of each manifold should be moved about .4" further out from the flanges to leave the same amount of room, as at present shewn for the nuts. (b) The exhaust pipe to the silencer should have a simple bend lying in the same plane as the silencer, instead of the compound one shewn. This pipe shoud if possible, pass through the fixed portion of the under-shield, and may be tried in 16 gauge material to begin with. (c) Mr. Royce does not wish any provision made for hot air in the manner shewn, as he thinks the air will be cold by the time it has passed through th the carburetter. He would like instead a sufficiently large connection left on the "V" exhaust pipe for sending across if necessary, a good flow of hot exhaust gas to a jacket on the carburetter. (d) The locking plate for the union nut should be slotted so that the nut can be locked where-ever it is tight. (e) A tubular distance piece and standard nuts should be used for securing the "V" pipe to the manifolds, as on the "Kite" instead of the long nuts shewn. (3) N. SCHEME 686. Referring to the full scale scheme of the silencer itself, it has already been remaked that the coverings are not desired by Mr. Royce. Contd. | ||
