RE "GOSHAWK" EXHAUST SYSTEM. Referring to the above, would you kindly note Mr. Royce's criticisms set out as follows, and illustrated in pencil on returned blueprints herewith:- (1) GENERAL SCHEME N.685. The compound bend in the exhaust pipe from the engine should be avoided by setting the silencer out further from the centre of the chassis in the plan view. The elbow connection to the swan neck pipe should also be avoided by dropping the silencer nearer to the ground a distance of .8" approximately. With the silencer thus further out and lower down it appears possible to take out the swan neck pipe centrally from the rear end plate. Mr. Royce further suggests that the bends on the swan neck pipe may still all lie in the same plane, but the pipe may be rocked over at the top nearer to the side channel of the frame with the object of providing the necessary clearance for the bracket tube on the back axle. The exhaust outlet would, of course, be put on in a position horizontal with the ground. No coverings should be used on the silencer and if it is necessary to use asbestos Mr Royce thinks it should be put on the pipe from the engine, but he does not wish these features adopted until it is found necessary. Owing to the greater amount of room between the swan neck pipe and the body on this chassis compared with the 40/50 H.P. it is desired to do without asbestos Contd. | ||
