GOVERNOR SPRINGS. The springs to be used on the governor should be tested for rating on the rig provided. The estimation of the rating of a torsion spring being an awkward proposition practically, the following method should be adopted. The plate arranged vertically with the torsion lever approximately horizontal with the spring in the free position. The lever should then be deflected through 10° and released gradually, its position of rest is then taken as the zero point. The brass weight of 100 grms. should then be applied to the end of the lever and the plate rotated until the lever is again horizontal. If the weight is now lifted through 10° and gradually lowered, the position of rest is taken to indicate the deflection point. The deflection with 100 grms. at 3.34" rad. should be 63° ± 5°.
