copy of letter received from: THE HOFFMANN MANUFACTURING CO.LTD. CHELMSFORD. 30th.April 1937. MESSRS.ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. DERBY. Dear Sirs, Re: Bevel Pinion Combined Thrust & Journal Race. ------------------------- We received your letter of the 27th.April, subheaded as above and regret that we have not been able to deal earlier with the subject matter of your previous letter of the 12th.instant. Our inspection however, of the N.2584 bearing has now been completed. Both outer races suggest that there has been two settings. With regard to the small outer race, the track shows the effect of rather severe thrust loading, whilst there is also indication of canting or lack of squareness in mounting. We notice too that the race has cracked across the Section and brittled at this point, and we regret to say that the material is not quite as we should wish to see it. In the case of the large outer race, this has been taking journal load, apparently very heavy at one of the settings. Here again, there is every indication of canting which agrees in position with that shown on the outer race. The inner tracks show heavy loading particularly at the name side, and this track has brittled rather deeply at one point due to the effect of thrust loading. All tracks, also the cages and balls are considerably heat discoloured. Will you kindly note that in view of the material of the one outer race not being entirely satisfactory, we are arranging to supply a new bearing without charge. | ||
