BAKELITE MOULDED OIL PUMP CASING INTRODUCTION The contents of this report deal with tests which were carried out on an oil pump casing and cover made from standard Bakelite moulding powder to R.R. specification. The object of the tests was to show the suitability of Bakelite for use on mechanical parts - as opposed to covers etc. It was decided that suitable parts for the test would be an oil pump casing and cover, as these would be subjected to hot oil, and pressure. In order to avoid the expense of making up special moulds it was decided to mould a solid block of Bakelite and to machine the necessary parts from it. It should be stressed at this point that the method of machining the parts from the solid, instead of moulding them, does not give a true indication of the conditions, as when moulding a block of Bakelite some three inches thick the outside cools faster than the core with a result that, even with a prolonged "cure" there is a certain amount of porosity in the centre of the block. A casing and cover were made up as described above, to take the standard "Wraith" oil pump gears. EW.965 - Driven Gear) Section 5170 EW.964 - Driving Gear) and the finished unit after being inspected was subjected to the following test schedule (see Fig.VII) :- (1) 2 hours endurance running @ 2000 r.p.m. (2) Inspect (3) 50 hours endurance running @ 2000 r.p.m. (4) Inspect (5) 100 hours endurance running @ 2000 r.p.m. (6) Inspect (7) 500 hours endurance running @ 2000 r.p.m. (8) Final Inspection Throughout the test "Motorine" C oil at 75°C was used at 25 lbs./ sq.in.
