44698 Exptl. Dept. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Les.4/KW. 2nd May, 1934. W. Martin-Hurst, Esq., The Packless Gland Co. Ltd., Windmill Road, Sunbury, Middlesex. Dear Martin-Hurst, Thank you for your letter of the 23rd ult. We quite agree with your remarks about fitting a stop for the bellows and are enclosing N. Sch. 4034 which shows 2 alternative schemes. Fig.I is preferable, but is only possible if you supply bellows which come within a .025" limit in free length. Now that the solid length is fixed by the stop, we thought this might be satisfactory. If the free length of Fig. I does not come within .025" limit, we shall have to adopt Fig.II. This scheme has the core adjustable to give an accurate free length. We were very interested to hear that you would be able to sweat the adjustable core with small size bellows by using a lower melting point solder. The bellows test rig is confirming the results we obtained with dempers having bellows made to large limits. We hope to be able to send you a duplicate rig in the course of a week or so. Yours sincerely, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
