X.3509. RE 20 H.P. CHASSIS - ARRANGEMENT OF VALANCE.

We send you herewith drawing No. LeC.1068 - preliminary arrangement of valance.

The object of using this type of guard is to prevent oil from the springs, if any, from getting on to the passengers' clothes, and I suppose to give the car a cleaner appearance.

The valance is intended to be made of aluminium about .100" thick. It is secured to the frame by means of a steel angle, and three pairs of bolts in accessible positions. It is secured to the steel angle by means of a bead and a large number of countersunk screws nutted on the bottom. The nuts are used so that great tightness can be secured.

Although we say that the valance is intended to keep oil off the passengers clothes, it is intended at the same time to try ferodo bushes for the springs, which we understand require no grease or oil, and make no noise. If any noise does manifest itself, it should appear in the spring pivot, and at this point it is very easy to fix a stauffer which can be attended to by reaching under the footboard.

We send you this drawing as it arises incidentally out of the work on the arrangement, the next item on which is the guard under the engine.
