NOV. 6, 1917

We have today ordered from the Hess-Bright Manufacturing Co. two dozen of their standard, 35 millimetre, medium type, deeply grooved, ball bearings; dimensions 35 x 80 x 21 millimetres, guaranteed load at 2000 R.P.M. about 600 lbs., 8 - 1/2" balls. The guaranteed loading we are told is very conservative, and new loadings are at this moment being brought out and incorporated in the new catalogue. This bearing is said to withstand quote double the above load, or 1200 lbs. at 2000 revs., for 300 or 400 hours.

We attach herewith the Hess-Bright catalogue, showing this bearing marked in red. The bearing with the spigoted cage, which you say we must make in your cable received today, is not standard, and therefore we shall have very great difficulty in getting it made in this country by any reputable firm.

The Hess-Bright Mfg. Co. say that their bearing will stand up well to excess loads, combined with considerable end thrusts.

Will you therefore on receipt of these bearings have them run for 100 or 200 hours, on the engine. We hope then to receive word from you whether these bearings are suitable before January 1st at the latest, in order that we may place our order with the Hess-Bright Company in time to give you bearings at the rate requested in your recent cable, namely, about 1800 bearings to arrive at Derby by the end of April, and the remainder of 3600 by the end of October, at the latest.

Oy.
