18.G.IV.

We have received your memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/ADS.12.31.
We note your remarks re. the clearance allowed for the water pump rotor and that you are going to make some tests. You will have received a full report from us giving you further information re. the circulation.

BRAKES.
We shall be very please to receive the brake lever to obtain the increased front braking as our rear braking is much to effective and is causing scoring of the drums.

DETONATIONS.
We have already sent you a report stating that we are using the ordinary Standard petrol obtained anywhere, and that to eliminate the detonations the ignition lever has to be retarded 5 notches from the fully advanced position. We have not used the Esso petrol during this test as we wish to obtain full information with the ordinary petrol. With the use of Esso petrol the detonations would be nil.

RE. RADIATOR.
The fixing of the stay from the dash to the radiator entails a lug on the inlet bend on the radiator. This lug has become loose. It is fastened on top of the inlet pipe by two screws and then apparently soft soldered. The soldering had given way, being a very poor job, and the screws had worked loose. We have had the lug right off and made a perfect job of the solder-ing before fixing the screws, after which the solder was run through evenly making a sound joint. We shall see whether the lug remains firm after this treatment.

EXHAUST.
We are running into trouble with the exhaust system. The two long studs that hold the centre joint of the manifold are stretching and we expect them to break at any moment. We have, on one or two occasions, experienced this trouble before, the studs having stretched where they are reduced, finally breaking in two. If possible we should like you to bring us two new studs out. We are also having trouble with the flange of the manifold and the flange on the downtake pipe distorting. I believe Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} has taken this matter up previously with By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and these flanges were supposed to have been made stronger. The distortion is caused by the weakness of both flanges. Otherwise, so far, we have had no trouble with the exhaust system.
