Re Petrol Filters.

We have measured the gaps between ten pairs of plates in each of the filters submitted. The results are given below.

There is, of course, a slight radius on the edges of the plates, which also are not level. Shadow effects have, however, been avoided by illuminating the plates from both sides, and the measurements are, therefore, as accurate as possible under the circumstances.

It was observed that in the Enots' filter some of the plates appeared to be burred on the edges, so that the gap between any pair of plates often varies considerably in width. The average width quoted for this filter, therefore, may be on the low side.

            Zenith.        Enots'.
Average width of gap.    0.0024"        0.0014"
Width of largest gap measured.    0.0030"        0.0022"
Width of smallest gap measured.    0.0013"        0.0008"

We return herewith both filters.
