( 3 ) To dismantle Pistons, the Cylinder head, carburettors, Air Silencer, Ignition wires, controls have to be dismantled. On the Cadillac, the sixteen Pistons & Rods could be removed with the dismantling of the lower half only. CLUTCH. To dismantle the clutch case, is one of the most in-accessible problems one could meet. Between two to four hours is needed to dismantle the cases, it is necessary to withdraw six studs. The rear of the Engine has to be lifted a certain height to clear the Clutch operating shaft. The trunion operating levers can be got out of position by removing the end bush and locking rings, and by judicious wangling the lower half case. It will just come off. The top half has to threaded round to the lower half position before it can be removed. To re-assemble, the same routine has to be adapted. FAILURES WHICH HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE MILEAGE ENGINE. 1) Petrol supply failed due to vapour lock with heat. Filter had to be removed from under the bonnet. Carburation too strong after standing. Petrol pump failed. 2) Bonnet difficult to fasten and open due to flexibility of sides, not allowing lock to line up, catches would not clear slots when released. 3) At 6.000 miles, the Oil Radiator cracked at the bottom seam and allowed oil to escape into the water system. 4) At 6.400 miles, N° 5 Cylinder, the head of the Exhaust Valve broke off. This caused a cracked Piston & Cylinder sleeve. 5) Trouble with water boiling with atmosphere temperature 31°c. 6) Crankshaft Damper load not remaining consistent. 7) Very bad leak of oil from rear Engine bearing. 8) N° I A Block exhaust push rod broken, and N° I B Block inlet push rod broken. These broke at 10.700 & 13.000 miles. FRONT DAMPERS. 9) Bad leak of oil from Spring pot joints to sleeve on frame. 10) Oil leak from bellows joint. 11) Top screws for bleeding pipe fouled the top suspension lever. 12) Bottom lever hit the under side of frame on rebound. | ||
