Dear Sirs,

Variable Rate Leaf Springs

We are getting interested in the above type of spring for our new cars. As you are aware, the bulk of the disposable load of a car is supported by the rear springs, and with the modern softly sprung car this means that the bump and rebound clearances vary within wide limits, as the load is varied. This makes it very difficult to provide adequate clearances under all conditions on a low-built car.

The Leaf Spring Institute of America has been conducting considerable research into this matter, and we understand that you are in a position to learn about the latest developments over there. It would be helpful to both of us if you would obtain as much information about them as possible because we shall shortly be ordering some variable rate springs from you.

We have been very interested in the articles appearing in the American paper "Automotive Industries" dated June 25th. and July 9th and no doubt you have been reading these also.

We should be glad to hear if you think you will be able to obtain the latest information on this subject, as regards design and manufacture of these springs.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD
