Dear Sirs,

For the attention of Mr.A.F. Martindale.

We thank you for your report on the samples of Safeguard 400M. We are interested to note that you are satisfied with the frictional qualities of our lining, but regret to learn that your tests indicate that the lining is inclined to produce noise when cold.

The cause of squealing brakes is always difficult to identify, and it is of interest to mention that in the three years that this lining has been in full scale production, we have only encountered one complaint concerning noise, which proved to be due to other causes than the lining. We realise the importance, in the case of productions of the standing of Rolls-Royce, that even the slightest tendency in the direction of noisy brakes must be rigorously eliminated. The most promising line for us to take in overcoming this tendency, is undoubtedly, the one which you suggest, namely to reduce the frictional value at the lowest temperatures by increasing the inclusion of metal in the lining. We are experimenting along these lines, and as soon as we are satisfied with the product evolved, we will submit further samples for your tests.

Yours faithfully,
THE GANDY BELT MANUFACTURING CO.,LTD.

Per G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Hein.
